Blood donation is safe

World Blood Donor Day is celebrated every year on June 14 to show appreciation for the people who have donated blood and helped save peoples’ lives. On this occasion we tell you all that you should know before you decide to donate and accept blood

Any special instructions I could follow before I donate whole blood?

Before you leave for blood donation you should eat a good meal that consists of iron-rich foods – like red meat, green leafy vegetables, oats etc. also you should consume plenty of fluids one to two hours before donating blood.

Will donating hurt?

You will go through very little discomfort while donating blood. The sensation is simliar to pinching your skin.

Will I feel dizzy after blood donation?

Most probably you will not. Those helping you with the donation take precautions before, during, and after the donation to ensure that you are safe. They will monitor your condition through the entire donation process for any signs of dizziness or giddiness. All donors are also asked to remain seated after the donation to rest and have some biscuits before they leave.

Should I eat before donating blood?

You should have a healthy preferably low fat meal within two to three hours of donating blood. You should also have refreshments after you have donated blood

How long does it take my body to replace the blood I donated?

The body immediately works on restoring the lost blood. The fluid that was stored in the tissues returns to the blood stream. Red blood cell production speeds up. A donor's blood volume is more or less restored within a few hours after donation. Red blood cells replace themselves more slowly.
